Ombudsman urges Zaldy Co to come home and file affidavit

The Office of the Ombudsman called on former congressman Zaldy Co to return to the Philippines and submit a formal sworn statement, saying his recent actions bypass established procedures for verifying testimonies.

In a public statement, the Ombudsman stressed that there is a clear process for assessing testimonies and other claims brought before the office. Officials acknowledged that this process can sometimes move slowly, but said it remains necessary to ensure that any statement is solid, documented, and not based on speculation.

According to the Ombudsman, Co has avoided the proper channels and instead chosen to release his testimony through social media. The office said this approach limits their ability to authenticate his claims and conduct an orderly review.

The statement also emphasized that the Ombudsman has long kept its doors open for Co should he decide to participate in the formal process. The office reiterated that he will be provided protection if he fears for his safety while cooperating with investigators.

The Ombudsman said its procedures are designed to protect both the integrity of testimonies and the rights of those who come forward with information. Officials repeated that Co’s cooperation through official means is necessary for any meaningful assessment of his statements.

The call for Co to return comes as his online claims continue to circulate, drawing public interest and questions about the next steps in the case. The Ombudsman said it remains prepared to receive his sworn testimony at any time.
