The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has assured assistance to a group of Filipino seafarers who were reportedly deported from the United States.
According to the DFA, it will extend support and bring the concerns of the deported seafarers to U.S. authorities.
Representatives from the International Seafarers Action Center met with DFA Assistant Secretary Ezzedin Tago of the Office of Migrant Affairs after news broke that more than 100 Filipino seafarers had been sent back to the Philippines.
The group urged the DFA to file a diplomatic protest against what they described as discrimination and violations of the seafarers’ rights.
In response, Tago committed that the DFA will coordinate with the Department of Migrant Workers and the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. to verify the report and ensure assistance for those affected.
