The Winds of Winter delayed again? George RR Martin confirms development, but fans are furious over his next move

Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire are still waiting for The Winds of Winter, which remains unfinished 14 years after the last book’s release. Now, George R.R. Martin (GRRM) has finally provided an update—but it’s not what readers hoped for.

In a new blog post, Martin confirmed that he is still working on The Winds of Winter but stopped short of announcing a release date. Instead, he shocked fans by revealing that he intends to complete another book before tackling A Dream of Spring, the long-awaited conclusion to A Song of Ice and Fire.

GRRM on The Winds of Winter Release Date: Still No Clear Timeline

On his blog, GRRM expressed excitement over A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, an upcoming television series based on his Dunk and Egg novellas. While discussing the show, he briefly mentioned his progress on The Winds of Winter.

The author assured fans that he is still working on the book, calling it a “very big novel,” but he did not provide a release date. He did, however, confirm that once he finishes The Winds of Winter, his next priority will be The Village Hero, another novella in the Dunk and Egg series.

“And once I finish The Winds of Winter, I will need to get hopping on The Village Hero, and all the other tales that await the lads,” Martin wrote.

The announcement has sparked frustration among fans, who expected GRRM to shift focus directly to A Dream of Spring, the long-promised conclusion to A Song of Ice and Fire. Instead, his comments suggest further delays.

A Song of Ice and Fire Fans React to GRRM’s New Book Plans

GRRM has long hinted that he plans to write additional Dunk and Egg novellas between major projects, using them as a creative “palate cleanser.” In addition to The Village Hero, he has teased another installment, She-Wolves, which could further delay A Dream of Spring.

Given the uncertainty around The Winds of Winter release date, fans are growing impatient. Some worry that, at 76 years old, Martin may never finish A Song of Ice and Fire—especially with new side projects emerging.

While GRRM remains focused on both his books and television adaptations, his latest update has reignited concerns over whether readers will ever see the conclusion of his epic saga.
