Man hacks elderly woman at Tagum Terminal without clear motive

An elderly woman remains under medical care after sustaining a deep wound from a sudden bolo attack at Tagum Public Terminal, Tagum City, Davao del Norte on the morning of January 29.

The victim, identified as Maria Lora Embodo of Monkayo, Davao de Oro, was inside a passenger van bound for Isulan, Cotabato, when the assault occurred. The suspect, Jhon Lantao Bero, 27, from Matampay, Kadingilan, Bukidnon, was reportedly on the same vehicle.

According to Tagum police, Embodo was waiting for other passengers to board when Bero suddenly grabbed her hair and hacked her with a bolo. Fortunately, she managed to evade a direct hit to the head, resulting only in a wound to her ear.

Hearing Embodo’s cries for help, a van conductor intervened, pulling the suspect out of the vehicle.

Authorities reported that Bero could not provide a clear reason for the attack. He is currently detained at Tagum City Police Station and may face charges of frustrated murder.
