Authorities stopped and verified a convoy of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s 131st Brigade at a checkpoint in Barangay Libertad, Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte, at about 7:30 a.m.
Personnel from the Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office and the Philippine Army conducted the checkpoint operation involving the convoy, which consisted of 23 vehicles and five motorcycles.
According to Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office Director PCol. Leo De Leon Sua, the group was unable to present the necessary documents or proof of prior coordination with concerned authorities regarding its travel through the area.
Because of this, police and military personnel peacefully directed the convoy to return to its point of origin in Picong, Lanao del Sur.
Sua said the action was intended to ensure public safety and maintain peace and order while respecting existing peace mechanisms.
He also urged concerned parties to conduct proper coordination before traveling in large convoys, particularly when passing through areas where authorities need prior information.
The police official said proper coordination can help prevent misunderstandings involving large groups traveling through the area.
The convoy was subsequently sent back to Picong after authorities conducted the verification at the checkpoint.
The incident highlights the authorities’ emphasis on coordination for large convoys while maintaining public safety and peace and order in the area.
Police and military authorities continue to recognize existing peace mechanisms while asking concerned groups to coordinate appropriately with authorities before conducting similar movements.
