Samar residents take shelter in caves as typhoon Tino hits

As Typhoon Tino batters Eastern Visayas, dozens of residents in Marabut, Samar sought refuge in nearby caves—an age-old practice in the coastal town whenever a strong storm strikes.

Photos from the area show evacuees bringing essentials such as food, cooking pots, thermos, sleeping mats, and blankets while waiting out the typhoon’s impact.

Police Captain Alner Peñeda, Officer-in-Charge of the Marabut Municipal Police Station, said that as of 1 p.m. on Monday, October 3, around 50 residents had taken shelter in a cave in Barangay Tinabanan. Another 30 evacuees were reported in Barangay Caluwayan.

According to PAGASA’s Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 8 released at 5 p.m. Monday, Marabut and nearby areas were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 as Typhoon Tino continued to intensify.

Authorities from the Marabut Police and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) are monitoring the situation closely and remain on standby for possible rescue or relief operations.

No major incidents have been reported so far, but officials reminded residents to stay alert and follow safety advisories as the typhoon moves across the region.
