A female collector for a microfinance nongovernmental organization was found dead in a secluded area of Sitio Ylaya, Barangay Matlang, Isabel, Leyte, on Aug. 9 after several days of searching.
The victim was identified as Jane, a resident of Matag-ob, Leyte.
Jane was last seen alive on Aug. 3 while reportedly collecting payments from her clients.
Authorities arrested a suspect identified as alias “Piolo” in connection with her death.
According to the suspect, he became offended when Jane asked him to pay his ₱3,000 debt and told him that he needed to sign a demand letter.
The suspect also said Jane told him that police could be sent to him if he failed to sign the document.
The two allegedly argued over the matter.
On Aug. 3, Piolo reportedly asked Jane to accompany him, telling her that he would borrow money to pay his debt.
CCTV footage captured the two riding together on a motorcycle.
They later went to a hut, where they continued discussing the debt, according to the suspect’s account.
Piolo allegedly strangled Jane during the confrontation. The victim reportedly fought back before hitting her head.
The suspect also allegedly punched Jane before bringing her to a secluded area.
The suspect admitted touching the victim’s private parts.
Jane was eventually found dead on Aug. 9 after authorities and others searched for her following her disappearance.
Piolo expressed hope that the victim’s family, his partner and their 1-year-old child would someday forgive him.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding Jane’s death.
