Over 19k PUV units under service contracting program to begin operations Monday

More than 19,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) units nationwide are expected to begin operations on Monday under the government’s Service Contracting Program (SCP).

This was assured by Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez during a news forum in Quezon City.

The initiative is a subsidy program where PUV drivers and operators are paid by the government based on a fixed rate per kilometer traveled.

This ensures income for drivers and operators regardless of passenger volume.

In addition, a 20% fare discount will also be implemented for passengers.

Under the program, bus drivers and operators will receive ₱100 per kilometer.

For the EDSA Busway, the program will cover 50 operators, 500 bus units, and serve up to 300,000 passengers daily.

According to Lopez, over 19,000 modern and traditional jeepneys, UV Express units, and EDSA Busway buses have already been enrolled in the program, which commuters are expected to feel immediately.

The first phase of the SCP will run for two weeks.

Out of the ₱1 billion initial budget, ₱800 million is allocated for road transport, while ₱200 million is set aside for maritime transport.
