U.S. military disables advertising trackers on military devices

Several branches of the U.S. military have disabled advertising identifiers on their computers and mobile devices amid concerns that location data could be used to track military personnel in conflict zones.

The Air Force, Army, and U.S. Special Operations Command are among those that have taken the measure.

The move aims to prevent the collection and sale of location data by data brokers, which could potentially be used to track the whereabouts of military personnel.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden and Representative Pat Harrigan called for an investigation into the Pentagon’s measures, saying the threat has not been fully addressed.

A privacy expert, however, warned that military devices could still be tracked through apps, network data, and other technical information.
