Ombudsman denies political motive behind cases vs Sen. Jinggoy

Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano has firmly denied claims that the P573-million plunder and graft cases filed against Jinggoy Estrada and several others are politically motivated.

The statement came after Estrada’s allegation that he was approached to abandon the Senate majority bloc in exchange for the charges against him being dropped.

In a statement, Clavano said that no individual has the authority to decide the outcome of cases on behalf of the Office of the Ombudsman. He stressed that any attempt to do so would itself constitute a form of corruption.

Clavano further explained that the case has been under investigation for a long time and that the processes involved have been conducted openly and transparently.

He also emphasized that accountability and politics should never be mixed.

According to Clavano, anyone attempting to blur the line between the two should likewise be held accountable.
