The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured the public that the rice included in its family food packs (FFPs) is safe for consumption following reports of an unusual smell.
The agency immediately coordinated with its Field Office 5 in the Bicol Region to verify the complaint.
However, the field office said it had not received any report concerning rice with an unusual smell.
According to DSWD Assistant Secretary Leo Quintilla, the rice included in family food packs undergoes strict quality checks before distribution.
Suppliers are also required to submit certifications showing that the rice meets the agency’s quality standards.
Among the requirements are a moisture content of no more than 14 percent, acceptable color and quality, no objectionable odor, and freedom from pests and contaminants.
The DSWD urged beneficiaries to immediately report any concerns regarding the contents of their food packs to the agency or their local government units for proper inspection.
As of September 1, the DSWD had distributed around 2.4 million family food packs to families affected by recent tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon, or Habagat.
