Group urges accountability for mining in Sierra Madre amid Typhoon Uwan

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) joined environmental communities in demanding accountability for the continued destruction of the Sierra Madre forest range.

This comes after recent typhoons, including the onslaught of the powerful Typhoon Uwan.

According to the group, those behind mining and so-called “pseudo-development” activities—which degrade and denude the mountain range—must be held responsible.

As the first line of defense for Metro Manila and major parts of Luzon, TDC stressed that Sierra Madre must be given the highest level of protection.

Because of this, the group urged the government to act immediately, punish violators of environmental laws, and enforce a halt to questionable “development projects” in the area.
