DOT reminds tourism businesses to uphold responsible practices during calamities

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has received reports of alleged overpricing and unfair practices affecting travelers and tourism workers in areas recently struck by calamities.

Because of this, the agency reminded tourism enterprises—especially accredited establishments—to ensure responsible and transparent business practices during these critical periods.

The DOT advised accredited hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related services not to impose unjust price increases on accommodations, dining, and other offerings.

The agency also encouraged businesses to adopt fair and flexible policies for booking cancellations and rebookings, particularly for guests affected by disasters.

In a statement, the DOT emphasized that tourism is a platform of service and compassion. It is the industry’s duty to ensure that travelers, evacuees, and responders are treated with safety, comfort, and dignity during crises.

Overpricing or refusing services at a time like this, the agency said, goes against the “spirit of hospitality” that Filipinos are known for.
