Group asks DOLE to probe alleged forced reporting to work during Typhoon Uwan

The BPO Industry Employees’ Network (BIEN) has formally filed a labor inspection request with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) National Office.

The group wants the agency to investigate alleged violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Law (RA 11058) by several BPO companies amid the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan.

Reports surfaced that some BPO employees were compelled to report for work despite unsafe weather conditions.

Along with this, BIEN urged BPO companies and DOLE to strictly uphold workers’ right to refuse unsafe work, as mandated by law.

They stressed that those who put workers at risk should be held accountable.

The group also called for penalties against employers who ignore OSH standards.

In the end, BIEN underscored that workers’ lives and safety must come first. No employee, they said, should be placed in danger just to keep business operations running.
