Senate President Alan Cayetano expressed concern that some individuals may attempt to sabotage the impeachment process to push political narratives ahead of the 2028 elections.
Cayetano admitted that deliberations on the Articles of Impeachment would not be easy, saying discussions on a single article could take three to four months. He said the Senate faces the challenge of maintaining focus throughout the lengthy proceedings.
Despite the difficulty, the senator said lawmakers must learn to multitask because handling such matters is part of their responsibilities as senators.
Cayetano also acknowledged that concentrating on the impeachment proceedings could become more complicated because, according to him, there are people who want to disrupt the process for their own narratives or political interests related to the 2028 elections.
The Senate leader did not identify specific individuals or groups allegedly attempting to interfere with the process.
He appealed to the public and fellow officials to set aside discussions related to the 2028 elections for now and instead focus on the problems currently being faced by Filipinos.
Cayetano stressed the importance of prioritizing public concerns over political agendas while the Senate performs its constitutional duties.
The senator’s remarks came amid ongoing public discussions regarding impeachment proceedings and their possible political implications ahead of the next national elections.
