Vice President Sara Duterte’s camp said it is prepared to face any new impeachment complaint that may be filed against her next year.
This statement comes after the Supreme Court declared the earlier articles of impeachment against Duterte unconstitutional, citing the one-year bar rule outlined in Article XI, Section 3, Paragraph 5 of the 1987 Constitution. The high court also ruled that the earlier complaint violated Duterte’s right to due process.
Lawyer Michael Poa, a representative of Duterte’s legal team, confirmed they are monitoring any developments on the issue.
The Supreme Court’s decision effectively nullified the previous complaint, reinforcing the constitutional safeguard that bars repeated impeachment attempts against the same official within a year.
No new complaint has been filed yet, but political observers are watching closely as discussions around Duterte’s performance and alleged actions continue to spark public and congressional debate.
Duterte has not issued a personal statement on the matter. Her legal team, however, stressed that they are not taking the threat of another complaint lightly and are reviewing all possible legal angles should a new case emerge.
The Office of the Vice President has yet to release an official comment beyond the statement made by Poa.
