Construction of the ₱23-billion Samal Island–Davao City (SIDC) bridge will continue despite a petition filed before the Supreme Court seeking to halt the project due to environmental concerns.
According to National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region XI Director Priscilla Sonido, the project remains on track. She emphasized that the bridge is designed to meet the growing needs of residents in Davao City and Samal Island.
A 208-page petition was recently submitted by environmentalist groups requesting the issuance of a Writ of Kalikasan. The petition asserts that the ongoing construction could damage marine ecosystems in the area, potentially violating citizens’ rights to a balanced and healthful ecology.
Despite the legal move, construction is progressing. As of April, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that the project is already 12% complete.
The SIDC bridge is a flagship infrastructure initiative expected to significantly reduce travel time between Davao City and Samal Island. Officials believe it will boost tourism, improve local business logistics, and enhance the delivery of government services.
Authorities have yet to issue a formal response to the petition, but regional officials remain firm on the bridge’s importance to the region’s development.
The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the petition.
