Mayor Joel Ruma of Rizal, Cagayan, was shot dead during a campaign event on Wednesday night, police confirmed.
The attack occurred past 9 p.m. at the barangay hall of Illuru Sur, where Ruma and his team were reportedly conducting campaign activities, including a photo session. Gunfire erupted during the event, hitting the mayor and two of his companions.
According to Police Regional Office 2 (PRO 2), Ruma was struck in the left shoulder and was immediately brought to a medical facility but was declared dead on arrival.
Two other individuals—Merson Abiguebel and Melanie Talay—sustained injuries in the incident. Their current medical condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities have yet to identify the suspects responsible for the fatal shooting. A hot pursuit operation was launched by local police, along with a region-wide flash alarm and high-risk checkpoints in nearby towns to track down the assailants.
PRO 2 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Antonio Marallag Jr. strongly condemned the incident, vowing that the police will not stop until justice is served.
Investigations remain ongoing. The motive behind the killing has yet to be established.
