Senate pushes proposal to strengthen protection for BPO workers

Senator Raffy Tulfo has filed a bill in the Senate aimed at ensuring stronger protection for business process outsourcing (BPO) workers in the country.

The measure, Senate Bill (SB) No. 1493 or the “BPO Workers’ Welfare and Protection Act,” seeks to improve job security and provide medical benefits for BPO employees.

The bill also recommends a national entry-level wage rate of no less than P36,000 for all BPO workers.

It underscores the importance of adhering to labor standards outlined in the Labor Code and advocates for additional employee benefits.

Under the proposed measure, BPO workers would be allowed to participate in democratic processes concerning workplace policies that may affect their rights.

The proposal comes in light of recent reports that some BPO companies allegedly forced employees to report onsite even during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan.
