Senate prepares for VP Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial

The Philippine Senate has begun preparations for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte following a directive from Senate President Chiz Escudero.

Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. confirmed the issuance of Senate Special Order 2025-015, which outlines the administrative framework for the proceedings. The order formally designates the Senate Secretary as the Clerk of Court, assigning key responsibilities in line with the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials.

The Clerk of Court will oversee non-judicial functions, including documentation, preparation of notices and summons, court calendar management, administration of oaths, and supervision of security and procedural matters.

The order also specifies the roles of the Office of the Senate Legal Counsel, the Office of the Deputy Secretary of Legislation, and the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms in ensuring the trial runs smoothly.

Additionally, the Deputy Secretary for Administrative and Financial Services has been tasked with coordinating budget, supplies, and equipment needs with the Senate’s Administrative and Financial Services office.
