Rosie O’Donnell has quietly packed up her life in America and started anew in Ireland — and sources say the move had everything to do with her 12-year-old child, Clay.
The outspoken comedian and former talk show host, 62, has relocated overseas in what insiders describe as both a political protest and a deeply personal decision. O’Donnell, long critical of conservative U.S. policies, had reportedly promised to leave the country following the last presidential shift. However, sources close to the star say her motivation runs deeper — she wanted to create a safer and more supportive environment for Clay, who recently came out as non-binary.
Ireland offers inclusivity and a fresh start
Clay, formerly known as Dakota, was previously diagnosed with autism and had been exploring a gender-neutral identity for some time. When the opportunity came to make a major move, insiders say Clay was thrilled.
“Rosie wanted out of the United States, but it was Clay who lit up at the idea of a fresh start in a place that embraces diversity,” a source familiar with the family said.
Rosie, who has five children — Parker, 29; Chelsea, 27; Blake, 25; Vivienne, 22; and Clay — has always been vocal about her own identity as a lesbian and her support for the LGBTQ+ community. Moving to Ireland, where her grandparents were born, felt like returning to her roots while securing a better future for her youngest.
A liberal oasis for the O’Donnells
Ireland has grown increasingly inclusive in recent years. Local citizens report that a significant number of Irish youth identify as LGBTQ+, making the Emerald Isle a more welcoming destination than ever before. One Dublin resident noted that as many as one in ten people aged 17 to 25 in Ireland now openly identify as LGBTQ+, reflecting the country’s shift toward greater acceptance.
For O’Donnell, that atmosphere was a major draw. A friend of the star shared that she intentionally sought out a home in a country where her children — especially Clay — could feel fully accepted and supported.
“She wants a space where her kids can thrive, and she believes Ireland is that place,” the insider said.
Though O’Donnell has largely stayed out of the spotlight since leaving The View, some speculate she may not be able to stay low-key for long. Her brash personality and outspoken views have often stirred controversy, and sources wonder if she’ll eventually ruffle feathers in her new homeland.
But for now, Rosie appears content. She’s focused on family and, above all, creating a life where her youngest child can be exactly who they are.
