Pope Francis dies at 88

The Vatican confirmed the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 at Casa Santa Marta, following a long battle with illness.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell made the announcement, stating that the Roman Catholic Church mourns the loss of its leader, who passed away peacefully.

Pope Francis had been diagnosed with double pneumonia earlier this year and had been hospitalized for more than a month. His condition became critical in February, although he made a brief public appearance on March 23, signaling hope for recovery.

Despite his frail condition, Pope Francis managed to preside over several Easter Sunday events in Saint Peter’s Square just a day before his passing.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history as the first Latin-American to become head of the Roman Catholic Church. He assumed the papacy in 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI. His papacy was marked by efforts toward reform, inclusivity, and compassion for the marginalized.
