Shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University leaves two dead

Two people were reported dead following a shooting inside Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Barangay Tumaga, Zamboanga City, as authorities continue investigating the incident.

The shooting happened past 7 a.m. while classes were beginning for most students.

According to the initial investigation by the Philippine National Police, the suspected shooter was also a student of the school and was reportedly enrolled in junior high school. Police have not confirmed the suspect’s exact grade level, although information received from sources identified the student as allegedly being in Grade 10.

One of the victims was reportedly shot by the suspect. The suspect then allegedly shot himself.

The PNP Zamboanga recovered two firearms believed to have been used in the incident, including a rifle and a short firearm or pistol.

Police said the firearms were identified after the suspect allegedly went live on Facebook while the shooting was taking place. The weapons were reportedly visible during the livestream.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and gather additional information about what happened.

The motive remains undetermined and is among the matters being investigated by police.

The bodies of the victims remained inside the school campus, particularly on the fourth and fifth floors, while authorities continued the investigation and related procedures.

Aside from the reported fatalities, no other deaths were reported. Several students reportedly sustained minor scratches amid the confusion that followed the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing as police work to establish the complete sequence of events and determine the motive behind the shooting.
