Gilas Pilipinas has received a major boost in its preparations for the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers as 7-foot-3 center Kai Sotto returned to training with the national team.
After nearly two years away from the national squad, Sotto resumed his Gilas duties and immediately joined the team’s practice sessions.
The 24-year-old center’s return is expected to provide a significant boost to Gilas Pilipinas, which is set to face Jordan and Iran on August 28 and 30, respectively, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Head coach Tim Cone said Sotto’s presence could make a major difference in the team’s style of play.
Sotto had been sidelined after suffering an ACL injury while playing in Japan’s B. League in January 2025.
Although he had recovered in time for the third window in July, Sotto opted not to play as he remained focused on pursuing his NBA aspirations.
His last appearance for Gilas Pilipinas came in November 2024 during the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, where he averaged 15.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.3 blocks in four games.
