Authorities rescued various protected wildlife species valued at an estimated P3.5 million from a resort in Sitio Tambo, Barangay Kawit, Medellin, Cebu, during an operation on June 3.
A 55-year-old resort manager, identified only as Alias Lyn, was arrested after authorities allegedly discovered wildlife species being kept and displayed without the required permits and documentation.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and local police authorities.
During the inspection, authorities found several birds and tortoises confined within the resort premises and allegedly being used as attractions for visitors.
Officials requested the necessary permits and legal documents authorizing the possession and display of the animals. However, the resort management reportedly failed to present the required authorization during the operation.
Among the animals rescued were parrots, macaws, cockatoos, tortoises, and other protected wildlife species covered by environmental protection regulations.
Authorities estimated the total value of the rescued wildlife at approximately P3.5 million.
Following the operation, the rescued animals were turned over to the DENR, where they will undergo assessment, care, and rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the arrested resort manager was brought to the CIDG Mandaue City Field Unit Office for proper disposition and further legal proceedings.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding possible charges but confirmed that the investigation is continuing.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by environmental and law enforcement agencies to monitor compliance with wildlife protection laws and prevent the illegal possession and display of protected animal species.
