The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of heavy rains across several parts of Luzon during the long weekend through National Heroes’ Day on Monday.
The weather agency said the rains are being caused by the prevailing Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Habagat.
From Friday through Saturday afternoon, rainfall of 100 to 200 millimeters may be recorded in Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac and Occidental Mindoro, according to PAGASA.
Meanwhile, rainfall of 50 to 100 millimeters is expected in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Oriental Mindoro.
PAGASA said the rains are expected to continue through Aug. 31.
During that period, some areas in the Ilocos Region, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra and Benguet may receive 100 to 200 millimeters of rainfall.
The agency warned that widespread flooding could occur, particularly in urbanized and low-lying areas and locations near rivers that receive 100 to 200 millimeters of rain.
Landslides are also possible in areas with moderate to high susceptibility to landslides, PAGASA said.
The forecast covers the long weekend leading to National Heroes’ Day on Monday, when heavy rains are expected to persist in several areas of Luzon.
The rainfall outlook highlights the potential for significant weather impacts in areas expected to receive the highest rainfall totals.
PAGASA’s warning comes as residents and travelers in affected areas face the possibility of continued heavy rainfall through Aug. 31.
The agency’s forecast specifically identifies areas where rainfall could reach 100 to 200 millimeters and warns of possible flooding and landslides associated with the expected rains.
