House prosecutors will ask Senate President Chiz Escudero to advance the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, arguing that delays could compromise evidence and intimidate witnesses.
Under the proposed Senate calendar, the trial is scheduled to begin on July 30, two days after the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA). However, Manila Representative Joel Chua emphasized in a press briefing today that postponing the proceedings increases the risk of “tampering of evidence” related to corruption allegations against Duterte.
Chua also raised concerns about witness intimidation, stating that the longer the delay, the greater the likelihood that key witnesses may be pressured or discouraged from testifying. Ensuring their safety and cooperation remains a major challenge for the prosecution.
Despite their appeal, Chua clarified that they would respect Escudero’s final decision regarding the trial schedule. He added that they are considering submitting a formal written request to the Senate to make their plea official.
The impeachment trial is expected to focus on corruption allegations and questionable fund allocations under Duterte’s tenure. The prosecution believes an earlier trial date would help maintain the integrity of the evidence and ensure a fair process.
