The Department of Health – Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) has logged a rise in fireworks-related injuries, logging 21 cases from December 21 to 29, up from the 11 recorded previously.
Negros Occidental reported the highest number of injuries, with 14 cases, followed by Bacolod City with three, and Negros Oriental and Siquijor each with two.
The injuries included 12 blast or burn cases without amputation and nine eye injuries. In response, DOH-NIR has urged the public to opt for safer alternatives, such as playing drums, using pots, or enjoying karaoke with family and friends.
The department also advised parents and guardians to supervise children closely to prevent fireworks use and encouraged attending community fireworks displays organized by local government units.
DOH-NIR also emphasized the importance of keeping a first aid kit available and called for public cooperation in reporting the use and sale of illegal fireworks like boga, 5-star, and piccolo.
It also warned against handling or lighting fireworks found on the streets and urged keeping small firecrackers like watusi away from children to avoid accidental ingestion or inhalation of harmful substances.
Meanwhile, Major General Leo Francisco, Director of the Philippine National Police – Civil Security Group, reiterated his warning to individuals purchasing illegal firecrackers through platforms like Shopee and Lazada.
