Negros Island logs 11 fireworks injuries, minors make up most cases

The Department of Health – Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) reported 11 cases of fireworks-related injuries from December 21 to 26, with minors being the primary victims.

Negros Occidental recorded the highest number of incidents at seven, followed by Bacolod City with two, and one each in Negros Oriental and Siquijor.

Most injuries were blast or burn wounds without amputation (eight cases), while three involved eye injuries, DOH said.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reiterated his call for caution during New Year’s celebrations, urging residents to prioritize safety.

He said that everyone can welcome 2025 with joy and meaningful traditions without unnecessary risks.

The DOH-NIR has been advocating for a shift towards safer practices, such as creating festive noise with drums, pots, and karaoke instead of fireworks. Families are also encouraged to attend community-organized fireworks displays.

Dr. Ma. Girlie Pinongan, Negros Occidental’s provincial health officer, stressed the importance of a holistic approach to safety.

She said that being careful not only prevents injuries but also ensures that families enjoy the holidays with good health and peace of mind.

Major General Leo Francisco, Director of the Philippine National Police – Civil Security Group earlier highlighted the dangers of buying illegal firecrackers, particularly online.

He urged the public to report unauthorized sellers on platforms such as Shopee and Lazada, which are under strict surveillance to remove listings of banned products.
