Chris Pine avoids court showdown with neighbor in surprise settlement over ‘invasive’ tree dispute

Actor Chris Pine and his neighbor, Helen Yu, have reportedly reached a last-minute settlement in their contentious property dispute, which was slated for trial on November 18. According to court documents obtained by In Touch Weekly, attorneys for Pine, 44, and Yu, an entertainment attorney, informed the court that they had “resolved this matter in principle,” though an official settlement agreement has yet to be finalized and submitted.

Yu initially filed a lawsuit against Pine in 2023, alleging negligence, nuisance, and trespass due to the invasive root system of Ficus Benjamina trees that Pine planted near the property line of their Los Angeles residences. She claims these trees caused extensive damage to her property, including cracks in walls, plumbing issues, and damage to her pool deck. According to Yu’s complaint, the roots created an “unreasonably unsafe condition,” disrupting her ability to enjoy her property.

Pine’s Countersuit and Lengthy Legal Battle

In response to Yu’s claims, Pine filed a countersuit, denying responsibility and asserting that Yu had constructed a fence encroaching on his property. He demanded that Yu reposition her fence to align with his property line. Both parties accused each other of causing undue damage, escalating what began as a property dispute into a prolonged legal battle.

In recent months, Yu’s legal team accused Pine of attempting to delay proceedings. She alleged that Pine’s attorneys informed her he would be unavailable for deposition due to filming commitments and an extended vacation abroad, which stretched through October. After several attempts to schedule Pine’s deposition, Yu’s counsel claimed that Pine’s team continued to delay, forcing the court to intervene. The judge eventually ordered Pine to be deposed by the end of October and instructed him to attend the trial in person if a settlement wasn’t reached.

Settlement Nears Finalization Amid Heated Allegations

Although the parties informed the judge of a tentative agreement, the court has scheduled a pre-trial hearing to ensure the settlement is executed and that trial proceedings are no longer necessary. The settlement details remain undisclosed, but Yu had initially sought unspecified damages to cover the extensive repairs her property required.

The ongoing dispute illustrates the complex nature of property law, particularly when it involves natural growth encroaching on neighboring properties. Pine and Yu now await the formal submission of their settlement, signaling a potential end to the heated exchange that turned a neighborhood dispute into a public spectacle.
