Actress Halle Berry is locked in a fierce legal battle with her ex-husband, Olivier Martinez, over their ongoing custody dispute regarding their son, Maceo. The conflict escalated when a judge tentatively ruled that Berry, 58, should pay a substantial portion of Martinez’s legal fees, initially estimating her contribution at $360,000. The decision has sparked a heated exchange, with Berry pushing back against the order and demanding sanctions against her ex.
Martinez, who argued he needed the funds to counter Berry’s “draconian” request to limit his custody rights, claims the financial support would level the playing field in their ongoing legal struggle. He is asking for specific allocations to cover legal fees, forensic analysis, and expert testimony totaling $363,270.59. To afford his legal counsel, he reportedly sold a Rolex and took out a $45,000 loan.
Berry Alleges Unfair Costs and Unreasonable Conduct
Berry has called Martinez’s fee request unreasonable, accusing him of stalling the process and escalating costs by neglecting co-parenting obligations. Her attorney asserted, “Halle should not be forced to pay for Olivier’s unreasonable conduct when he is the sole reason why the fees and costs have escalated in this case.” She contends Martinez is willingly unemployed and attempting to exploit her financial resources.
In response, Berry sought $455,000 in sanctions against Martinez, aiming to “incentivize him to cooperate” and reduce legal expenses. She also accused him of trying to sway their son’s therapist by involving an acquaintance from her past employment. Despite the judge’s preliminary ruling, Berry’s team maintains that some of the findings contradict evidence, challenging the order’s legality.
Judge Awaits Final Settlement on Custody
As part of their 2023 settlement, Berry agreed to pay Martinez $8,000 monthly in child support. However, her bid for sole legal custody of Maceo remains unresolved, with the court yet to rule on her latest request.
