More than 20,600 schools across the country have suspended classes due to the onslaught of Typhoon Tino in parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
According to the Department of Education (DepEd) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS), a total of 20,681 schools across nine regions implemented class suspensions, affecting around 10,000 learners.
The highest number of affected schools were recorded in Region VIII (Eastern Visayas), followed by Region VI (Western Visayas) and Region VII (Central Visayas).
Meanwhile, 2,507 classrooms from 522 schools are currently being used as evacuation centers, most of which are in Region VII, Region VI, and the Negros Island Region (NIR).
Initial reports also showed that 76 schools across six regions sustained damage due to the typhoon, with the most cases coming from Eastern Visayas.
Based on the initial assessment, 64 classrooms were totally damaged, 91 sustained major damage, and 237 were classified as having minor damage.
