Abante seeks House probe into missing ‘sabungeros’

The House of Representatives is set to investigate the unresolved case of the missing sabungeros, following the filing of House Resolution No. 53 by Manila 6th District Representative Bienvenido Abante Jr.

The resolution seeks a congressional inquiry into the alleged abduction and possible killing of 34 cockfight bettors, who were reported missing between 2021 and 2022 and remain unaccounted for.

Speaking at a press briefing, Abante described the case as a “modern-day horror story,” noting that cockfighting can no longer be considered a harmless vice. He cited reports suggesting that some of the victims were allegedly dumped in lakes.

Abante stressed that while the cockfighting industry may generate revenue for the government, it can never justify the loss of human lives.

He also warned of the growing impact of gambling on the country’s youth, saying it could lead to long-term addiction if left unchecked.
