Sen. Risa Hontiveros is preparing for the possibility of running in the 2028 elections but said she is willing to give way if another candidate from their group proves stronger.
In an interview with Brigada NewsFM Manila, Hontiveros said she wants their group to unite behind a single candidate to give them a “fighting chance” in the 2028 elections.
She said the group aims to decide whom it will support before the end of the year or, at the latest, during the first quarter of 2027.
Hontiveros said she is currently strengthening her position in preparation for the possibility that she could be chosen as the group’s candidate.
If she emerges as the strongest candidate, Hontiveros said she would ask for the support of her colleagues.
However, she stressed that if another personality from their group is found to have a stronger chance of winning, that candidate should receive their collective support and be fielded in the 2028 elections.
Her remarks indicate that Hontiveros is keeping open the possibility of seeking a national post in 2028 while also leaving room for a unified decision within her group.
The senator did not say that she had finalized her candidacy. Instead, she described her current efforts as preparation in case she is selected as the group’s standard-bearer.
Hontiveros’ position also places emphasis on unity among members of her group as they consider their options for the 2028 elections.
The group’s target is to settle on a candidate by the end of 2026 or during the first quarter of 2027.
For now, Hontiveros remains open to running if she is considered the strongest option, but she said she would support another candidate from their group if that person has a better chance of winning.
