Sen. Imee Marcos questioned the so-called “Pax Silica” project in a video posted on social media, raising concerns about its possible environmental impact and even jokingly asking whether it should be called “Pax Silica” or “Pox” because of the headaches it has caused.
Marcos said the project was initially presented as the North Luzon Corridor, which generated optimism among some sectors because it was expected to attract manufacturing investments and create additional jobs that could help boost the local economy.
She said the optimism later faded after concerns emerged over the United States’ interest in securing supplies of rare earth minerals, which are found in many countries.
According to Marcos, if rare earth extraction is pursued in the Philippines, it could lead to environmental hazards as well as shortages in water and electricity supplies.
Her remarks came amid ongoing discussions surrounding the proposed development and its potential effects on communities and natural resources.
The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), however, recently rejected claims circulating online that the project would displace indigenous peoples.
The agency said the information was false, explaining that the project site is located outside titled ancestral domains.
BCDA maintained that the development would not require the relocation of indigenous communities based on the project’s current location.
Marcos’ statements and the agency’s clarification reflect differing views over the proposed project, particularly on its potential environmental effects and its impact on local communities.
The senator’s comments focused on the possible consequences of rare earth extraction, while BCDA addressed allegations involving the displacement of indigenous peoples, saying such claims were inaccurate because the project is outside recognized titled ancestral domains.
