Three people, including a 75-year-old woman, were arrested in an entrapment operation over alleged involvement in illegal abortion activities in Cebu City.
The operation was conducted on June 19 inside an inn in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City. Among those arrested was alias Amparo, 75, a resident of Talisay City. Also apprehended were a man identified as the group’s driver and another acting as a middleman.
In an interview with Brigada News FM Cebu, alias Amparo admitted she had no medical background but previously worked in a clinic. She claimed she was forced to perform abortions because of desperate requests from women who were either ill or had young children to care for.
Police discovered the group after monitoring a Facebook page that allegedly offered illegal abortion services. Authorities said this was where the suspects transacted with clients.
According to PRO-7 Director Police Brigadier General Rederico Maranan, the group charged around ₱40,000 per abortion procedure, which was split between the middleman and the abortionist.
Recovered during the operation were medical tools and suspected abortion drugs.
Investigators said the group may have been operating since 2021. Police are also looking into their possible connection to the discovery of three dead fetuses in Liloan on June 13.
The three suspects will face charges for intentional abortion under Article 256 of the Revised Penal Code.
