Two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed and four high-powered firearms were recovered following a security operation conducted by government troops in the hinterlands of Barangay Nurcia, Lanuza, Surigao del Sur.
The operation was carried out at about 12 noon on March 22, 2026, by troops of the 36th Infantry “Valor” Battalion.
According to military reports, troops encountered members of the NPA under the Sub-Regional Sentro de Grabidad (SRSDG) Westland of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC).
The two NPA members killed were initially identified by their aliases “Ka Rex” and “Ka Bunso,” both believed to be members of SRSDG Westland NEMRC.
Authorities said the firefight forced the remaining NPA members to retreat from the area, leaving behind the two casualties.
Information about the presence of the armed group was reportedly provided by residents from nearby communities who were allegedly threatened and extorted by the NPA members.
Troops recovered four high-powered firearms from the encounter site, which authorities said weakened the armed group’s capability in the area.
After the clash, government troops secured the area to ensure the safety of nearby communities and to prevent further threats.
