Tulfo says leadership change needed to restore Senate dignity

Sen. Erwin Tulfo believes that changing the Senate leadership or removing Senate President Alan Cayetano from his post is the only way to restore the dignity of the chamber.

In an interview, Tulfo criticized the current direction of the Senate, saying three weeks have already passed but only one proposed measure has been discussed.

The senator was referring to Senate Bill No. 1511 filed by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, which seeks to protect patients from being detained by hospitals.

Tulfo also questioned how the Senate used its time in recent weeks, saying discussions during plenary sessions focused on issues involving Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, including matters related to protecting the senator, whether the Senate was attacked, and whether a conversation to check on someone took place.

According to Tulfo, the public may have appreciated it more if senators had spent time discussing measures such as the proposal of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta concerning electricity.

His remarks came as he expressed concern over the chamber’s priorities and its legislative output under the current leadership.

Tulfo maintained his position that a leadership change is needed to bring back public confidence and dignity to the Senate.

The issue adds to ongoing discussions within the chamber regarding leadership, priorities, and the direction of legislative work under Cayetano’s term as Senate president.
