Teenage pregnancy remains a major issue in Central Visayas

Teenage pregnancy continues to be a major issue in Central Visayas despite a notable decline in the region’s fertility rate over the past three decades. The fertility rate dropped from 4.4 in 1993 to 2.0 in 2022.

The National Demographic and Health Survey reports that 5% of women aged 15 to 19 in the region are pregnant, which aligns with the national average.

Archel Lea Jayme from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) revealed that over 3,100 live births were recorded in 2022 from girls aged 10 to 14 nationwide, marking a staggering 35% increase compared to the previous year.

To combat teenage pregnancies, Jayme emphasized the need for the Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 7 to implement Comprehensive Sexuality Education in schools and communities. These programs must provide accurate information on reproductive health, gender equality, and decision-making skills.
