Senate pushes Anti-POGO Act to ban crime-ridden offshore operators

The Senate has taken a significant step towards banning Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) as Senator Win Gatchalian sponsored Senate Bill No. 2868, also known as the “Anti-POGO Act,” on the Senate floor.

Senator Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, emphasized that POGOs have brought nothing but criminal activities to the country, including human trafficking, money laundering, and tax evasion. He urged immediate action, saying the Philippines would be better off without these operators.

Senator Joel Villanueva echoed this sentiment, highlighting the economic losses incurred since POGOs were allowed in the country. “We’re spending more than we’re gaining from POGOs,” Villanueva remarked, calling for a swift resolution.

Adding to the pressure, Senator Risa Hontiveros vowed to push for amendments imposing harsher penalties on government officials who aid illegal POGO operations. This proposal aims to deter corruption and ensure accountability.

The Senate’s move reflects growing public and political outcry against POGOs, with critics arguing that their negative impact outweighs any economic benefits they claim to provide.
