Sen. Imee Marcos claimed that the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte was politically motivated and part of a “group effort” orchestrated by the administration.
Marcos alleged that the operation, which led to Duterte’s arrest and subsequent transfer to The Hague, Netherlands, appeared to have been carefully planned to weaken the Duterte family ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
The senator made the statement as she reflected on the recent hearings of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. According to Marcos, the past three hearings suggested there may have been a cover-up regarding the circumstances surrounding Duterte’s arrest.
She also hinted that the administration deliberately crafted the events to tarnish the former president’s image and diminish the Dutertes’ political influence moving into the next national elections.
Marcos announced that she would hold a press conference tomorrow to present all findings and insights gathered from the committee hearings. She said the public deserved transparency, particularly on matters that could impact the country’s political future.
Duterte’s arrest has sparked a wave of political tension nationwide, with supporters and critics closely watching the unfolding developments.
The administration has yet to respond to Marcos’ latest allegations.
