Rocket debris found in Sulu waters after China launch

A suspected rocket debris was recovered in the waters near Barangay Suang Bunah, Pangutaran, Sulu, on Jan. 1, according to local authorities.

The Pangutaran Municipal Police Station said the debris was initially recovered and towed by a fisherman on Dec. 30, 2025. The object was later brought to shore and is currently under the custody of Barangay Suang Bunah officials.

Authorities said coordination is ongoing between the Coast Guard Station Western Sulu and the barangay for the possible transfer of the debris to the Philippine Coast Guard for proper handling and disposition.

The PCG renewed its call for the public, particularly fisherfolk and coastal residents, to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects found at sea. The agency stressed that unidentified debris could pose safety risks and should not be handled without proper assessment by authorities.

The recovery followed the Dec. 26, 2025 launch of China’s Long March 8A rocket from the Hainan International Commercial Launch Center. According to the Philippine Space Agency, portions of the rocket were expected to fall within designated drop zones after launch.
