Twelve people, including two children, were injured after a rented multicab plunged into a deep ravine in New Carmen, Tugbok District, here on Saturday morning, police said.
The accident happened on Dec. 28 as the multicab was traveling uphill when its engine reportedly malfunctioned, according to a report from the Davao City Police Office. The vehicle then moved backward uncontrollably and fell into a ravine estimated to be about 50 meters deep.
Police said all 12 occupants were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. Among those injured were two children, ages 9 and 2. The victims were brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center for evaluation and care.
Doctors later reported that all the injured passengers were in stable condition and out of immediate danger.
Authorities said the multicab had been rented for family use, which explained why the passengers were relatives. No fatalities were reported in the incident.
Initial findings indicated that the mechanical malfunction occurred while the vehicle was ascending a slope, causing the driver to lose control. Further details about the condition of the vehicle were not immediately released.
Rescue personnel responded to the scene and assisted in retrieving the victims from the ravine before transporting them to the hospital.
Police reminded motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good working condition, especially when traveling on uphill roads, and to exercise caution to avoid similar accidents.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the vehicle malfunction.
