U.S. human rights groups have filed a case against United States President Donald Trump following his administration’s sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Trump imposed sanctions on the ICC in February 2025 after his administration challenged the court’s jurisdiction over U.S. and Israeli officials.
The sanctions also came amid the ICC’s investigations into alleged war crimes in Gaza and the issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The groups said the restrictions could undermine efforts to seek justice for victims of crimes committed during the conflict.
A U.S. government official, meanwhile, defended the sanctions, saying they were imposed to protect the country’s sovereignty against what the administration considers excessive interference by the court.
The groups also urged international organizations and the European Union (EU) to oppose the sanctions and call on the Trump administration to reverse the measure, warning that it could threaten international justice.
