Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte claimed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. won the presidency because of the support of Vice President Sara Duterte, as he challenged the chief executive to present the accomplishments of his administration during the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA).
In a statement, Duterte responded to concerns expressed by Marcos that government policies implemented under his administration could change if Vice President Duterte were elected president in 2028.
The lawmaker argued that instead of focusing on future political scenarios, the president should clearly enumerate the reforms and achievements of his administration.
Duterte said the public wants to hear concrete results rather than what he described as “English buzzwords,” new slogans and scripted standing ovations from lawmakers during official speeches.
According to the congressman, Filipinos are more concerned about issues affecting their daily lives, including rising prices, flooding and other challenges.
He added that these concerns serve as a more meaningful measure of government performance than applause received during official events.
Duterte also questioned whether the administration would leave behind a legacy that extends beyond speeches and photo opportunities.
The Davao City representative said that the true measure of a president’s success would come from the Filipino people, particularly those who continue to wait for the changes promised during the 2022 election campaign.
He maintained that public opinion, rather than reactions inside the Batasang Pambansa, would ultimately determine the administration’s record.
The remarks came as preparations continue for the president’s upcoming SONA, where Marcos is expected to discuss the administration’s accomplishments, priorities and plans for the country.
Duterte’s statement adds to the ongoing political exchanges involving allies and supporters of President Marcos and Vice President Duterte ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
