1Tahanan Party-list has begun distributing free handheld metal detectors to selected schools nationwide as Congress continues to consider the proposed Bantay Paaralan Act.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with various Brigada News FM stations, will provide a total of 157 handheld metal detectors to schools across the country.
Of the units, 57 will be distributed in Luzon, 46 in the Visayas and 54 in Mindanao.
1Tahanan said the initiative aims to strengthen school security while broader policy reforms are being pursued.
The distribution complements House Bill No. 10616, or the Bantay Paaralan Act, filed by 1Tahanan Party-list Rep. Elmer “Gaw” Catulpos.
The proposed measure seeks to establish more organized and standardized security measures in schools, including controlled entry points, the use of metal detectors, and clear bag inspection protocols.
According Congressman Catulpos, the distribution of metal detectors is not intended to replace a comprehensive school security policy. Instead, the group described the initiative as a practical demonstration of how basic security measures can be implemented while the proposed legislation is being considered.
Gaw Elmer said strengthening school security is aimed at helping provide students with a safer environment for learning and ensuring they can return home safely to their families.
The Bantay Paaralan Act remains a proposed measure as Congress continues its legislative process.
Meanwhile, 1Tahanan said it would continue supporting immediate and collaborative measures to improve security in schools through the distribution of handheld metal detectors.
