PCO to launch website for public reporting of fake news

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) is set to launch a website that will allow the public to report suspected fake news circulating on social media and other digital platforms.

During a press briefing in Malacañang, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the planned online platform aims to help authorities identify individuals responsible for spreading false information and subject them to appropriate action.

Castro said the PCO will not tolerate the continued spread of fake news and will pursue accountability against those proven to be responsible for disseminating misleading content.

The planned platform follows the earlier launch of “Oplan Kontra Fake News” in March. Under the initiative, the government established an Anti-Fake News Desk designed to receive reports from the public and review questionable or suspicious content circulating online.

At the same time, nine media organizations signed an agreement with the PCO to strengthen efforts against misinformation and promote the dissemination of verified information.

On April 7, the PCO also referred several social media posts to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for investigation. The referral involved posts allegedly containing false information related to the energy sector.

Earlier, PCO Acting Secretary Dave Gomez warned that authorities may file cases against individuals who spread false information, including content related to the President and members of the First Family.

Officials said the planned reporting platform is part of ongoing government efforts to address misinformation and encourage public participation in identifying questionable online content.
