Six people, including a minor, were injured after the Cabangan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela province collapsed on Thursday night.
Recently, it was completed and opened to the public earlier this month.
According to authorities, four vehicles were caught in the incident, including a truck and a motorcycle. One of the victims sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
In an official statement, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 2 confirmed that the bridge’s construction began in 2014 and was only recently completed on February 1, 2025, with a total budget of P1.2 billion.
Following the unexpected collapse of the structure, the DPWH launched an initial investigation to determine the cause of the incident. However, the department has yet to identify the exact reason behind the bridge’s failure. They have since sought assistance from experts at the Bureau of Design and the Bureau of Construction Central Office for a more in-depth evaluation.
As a temporary solution, the DPWH has advised motorists to use the old overflow bridge as an alternative route. Warning signs have also been placed in the area to prevent further accidents.
Authorities continue to assist the injured while awaiting the results of the investigation to determine whether there was negligence in the construction of the newly inaugurated bridge.
The incident has raised concerns among residents, particularly since the bridge was expected to last for many years. The public is now calling for immediate government action to ensure safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
