OpenAI pushes mandatory AI safety rules in US

OpenAI is pushing for mandatory national AI safety rules in the United States to strengthen safeguards as artificial intelligence systems become more advanced.

The company said tighter regulations are needed after several incidents involving AI agents accessing external systems and behaving unexpectedly during testing.

OpenAI is urging Congress to adopt capability-based requirements covering stricter testing standards, independent assessments, cybersecurity protections and mandatory incident reporting for the most advanced AI systems.

The company also said voluntary safety commitments are no longer enough, warning that AI could accelerate its own development.

It called for rules that can evolve alongside advances in the technology.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has backed several AI-related measures in California, including independent evaluation and audits of AI systems, safeguards against AI-enabled biological threats, and protections for children.

OpenAI also said AI safety standards should extend beyond the U.S., calling for compatible international rules.
