NBI nabs man over bomb threat on COMELEC sites

The National Bureau of Investigation-Central Visayas (NBI-7) arrested a man who posted a public offer of ₱5 million to anyone who could plant and detonate bombs at all Commission on Elections (COMELEC) sites.

The arrest occurred around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, at the suspect’s residence in Casili, Mandaue City, Cebu.

Authorities identified the suspect as Gian Garlo, who allegedly used the Facebook account “Gi Maningo” to publish the post on May 5.

NBI is still investigating the motive behind the post, which has sparked outrage and concerns over election security.

Garlo now faces multiple charges, including violation of Presidential Decree 1727 (prohibition of bomb threats), Republic Act 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, and the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 17 years.

The NBI has emphasized that threats—whether real or online—are taken seriously, especially during heightened election periods.
